Papers of and concerning Alexander Burnes., 1831-1835.
Scope and Contents
Sir Alexander Burnes was a British political officer in India and an explorer. He travelled in India, Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan. He was assassinated on a mission to Kabul in 1841.
Burnes wrote 'Travels into Bokhara', which was published by John Murray in 1834 and sold 900 copies on the first day of publication. The letters in this subseries are of Burnes to John Murray [II] and mainly relate to the production and publication of his book, although there is also some focus on his travels. There are also two letters of Ranjit Singh, 1st Maharajah of the Sikh Empire, to Alexander Burnes along with a letter of David Burnes to John Murray [II].
In addition, there is a manuscript advertisement for 'Travels into Bokhara' and a receipt for a payment for the same work.
