Scope and Contents
Letters, 1855-1860, of Philip Stanhope to John Murray III, with related papers. They concern works of his published by Murray, including “Addresses delivered at Manchester, Leeds and Birmingham”, “The rise of our Indian empire” and “Life of the Right Honourable William Pitt”, as well as “Memoirs by the Right Honourable Sir Robert Peel”, published by Stanhope and Edward Cardwell. He advises on Murray travel handbooks, and there is also some discussion of politics, and of his reading, with comments on manuscripts and papers sent to him for criticism. Until March 1855 the letters are signed “Mahon”, his title prior to “Earl Stanhope”. The letters are arranged in chronological order.
