Letters to John Murray, publishers, of John Martineau., 1868-1896.
Scope and Contents
One letter to John Murray III, the remainder are to John Murray IV and Hallam Murray. They concern the preparation and publication of several works by John Martineau, including:
“Letters from Australia” (1869 – published by Longmans, Green and Co.);
“The life and correspondence of Sir Bartle Frere, Bart., G.C.B., F.R.S., etc.” (1895);
“The Transvaal trouble, how it arose: being an extract from the biography of the late Sir Bartle Frere” (1896).
A number of the letters concern the preparation of Martineau’s manuscript of “The life of Henry Pelham, Fifth Duke of Newcastle, 1811-1864”. The manuscript was published in 1908.
The letters are arranged chronologically.
