Scope and Contents
The letters are to John Murray III and concern the publication of “The cities and cemeteries of Etruria” and “Handbook for travellers in Sicily”.
The letters are arranged chronologically.
1844, 1846-1849: folios 1-18;
1851-1852, 1856-1858: folios 19-47;
1860-1864, 1867-1869: folios 48-97 [Note];
1870, 1874, 1876-1879: folios 98-193;
1880, 1883, 1886-1889: folios 194-215.
Three drawings relating to Etruscan antiquities:
(i) a study, ink over pencil, “Head of the Etruscan Typhon to be substituted instead of the vase on the cover of Etruria”, folio 216;
(ii) a study, ink and body colour over pencil, “Head of a Sasa (to be substituted for the Gorgon’s head on the cover of Etruria, over the title”, folio 217;
(iii) a pencil tracing of the image from an Etruscan lecythus, or lekythos, (oil-flask) showing a standing figure holding a vase in one hand and, with the other, passing a bowl to the seated figure of a woman, folio 218.

Folios 70-71. Letter, 17 March 1863, of George Dennis to Charles Newton, enclosed in Dennis’s letter to John Murray III, 18 March 1863 (folios 68-69), requesting that it be forwarded to Newton.
