Scope and Contents
Charles Elliot was a prominent bookseller and publisher based in Parliament Square, Edinburgh. He was a notable publisher of medical works in particular. Elliot established the business in 1771, and it continued until his death in 1790. Although the business was based in Edinburgh, Elliot traded throughout Great Britain and Ireland, Europe and America. Elliot’s surviving papers reflect his business activities and interests.
In addition to the outgoing correspondence in this series, there are letters of members of the Elliot family to members of the Murray family in the Family Papers series.

Arrangement
The papers are divided into two series and one item: the copy letter books (MSS.43090-43097); the ledgers (MSS.43098-43101); and a single Sederunt book (MS.43102).
Custodial History
After the death of Charles Elliot in 1790, his business papers remained in the Elliot family until his daughter, Anne, married John Murray II in 1807. Through that union the papers came under the custody of the Murray family, where they remained until they were included in the sale of the John Murray Archive to the National Library of Scotland in 2006.
