Lists of members of Parliament, and of the parliamentary constituencies in 1783., 1783.
Scope and Contents
The contents are as follows.
(i) A list of members of the ‘Present’ Parliament, indicating those ‘ab[road]’, ‘Cant attend’, ‘P[ro]’, ‘H[opeful]’, ‘D[oubtful]’, ‘C[ontra]’. It was, ‘apparently prepared in the course of the struggle between the Coalition [of Fox and North] and their opponents in the last weeks of 1783, either just before or just after the accession of Pitt, probably just after’ (‘Parliamentary papers of John Robinson’, page 50, where the lists of members for the English counties and Wales on folios 1-4 are printed).
This manuscript also contains (folios 6-22), the lists for ‘open’ and ‘close’ burghs and Scotland, an analysis of those ‘hopeful’ and ‘doubtful’, and ‘a general recapitulation’ or summary (folio 1).
(ii) A list of the parliamentary constituencies in 1783, estimating the ‘probable attitude of the members of the House as it existed’ towards the end of 1783 ‘in case the King should dismiss the coalition ministry and Pitt should take office’ (‘Parliamentary papers of John Robinson’, page 65; see also pages 66-98, where it is printed in full from Robinson’s copy) (folio 23).
