Scope and Contents
The contents are as follows:
(i) Letters, 1869-1870, of the Reverend Henry Moseley, mathematician, to William Matthews, probably the editor of the Alpine Journal, concerning Moseley's theory of glacier motion (folio 1), with a letter, circa 1870, from John Ball, president of the Alpine Club, to Matthews, concerning a controversy with Moseley in the Journal (folio 30);
(ii) Letters to Henry Cockburn, of the Alpine Club, London, relating to the purchase of mountaineering books, 1888,1891 (folio 32), and to his membership of the New Zealand Alpine Club, 1924-1934 (folio 36).
(iii) Miscellaneous papers, 1896-1901, undated, relating to the Alpine Club or to mountaineering (folio 63).
(iv) Letters, 1901-1905, to Godfrey W H Ellis on mountaineering and Alpine books (folio 83), with an anonymous statement, undated, concerning him (folio 96).
(v) Correspondence, 1909-1947, of R W Lloyd, concerning mountaineering and the business of the Alpine Club (folio 100).
(vi) Papers, 1869-1947, relating to the Alpine Club, London, including: a list of Alpine ascents, 1869-1909 (folio 112); a list of 'Alpine books not mentioned in A[lpine] C[Iub] Cat[alogue] November 1899' and a list of 'privately printed Alpine Books or pamphlets, not being well known or classical items', 1825-1895, both in the same handwriting (folio 118); printed pamphlets, 1945-1946, concerning new rules of the Alpine Club and a report, 1947, of the finance sub-committee (folio 123).
