Two volumes on secular antiquities, being the second and third parts of a work in three volumes by Richard Augustine Hay on the ecclesiastical and secular antiquities of Scotland., 1700-1707, or after.
Scope and Contents
The two volumes, known and frequently cited as `Hay`s Memoirs`, contain accounts of varying lengths and detail of titled, landed and other Scottish families, preceded by contents lists, and followed by indexes of names and, in 34.1.9(i), lists of books relating to the subject by Scottish writers (folio 347 verso), Irish writers (folio 360), and English writers (folio 361 verso), and by accounts of Scotsmen who died abroad (folio 365). In addition to four architectural drawings of (the projected collegiate church of) Roslin Chapel (Adv.MS.34.1.9(i), folios 131 verso-132, 285 verso, 290 verso), there are apparently irrelevant engravings portraying saints and unidentified buildings and properties dispersed through both volumes and, in 34.1.9(ii), four unrelated printed works (folios 23, 25, 326, 331).
