Scope and Contents
The contents are as follows.
(i) Melody, bass, and words of twenty-four songs (folios 1-15 verso), with one instrumental piece (folio 4 verso). Many of the songs are by the English lutenist song writers of the early 17th century. The Scottish songs in the collection were mostly well-known at the period.
(ii) Fifteen common psalm tunes, church tune and bass; all appear in the psalter of 1635. (Folios 16-19 verso.)
(iii) Notes on musical theory. (Folios 29 verso-30 verso.)

Custodial History
Robert Ker of Ferniehurst's name appears inside the front cover of the volume, with the date 1669, the year in which he bought Ferniehurst from William Ker, 3rd Earl of Lothian. The initials L.A.K on the binding may stand for Lady Ann Ker, the Earl's wife.
