The first notebook volume was begun on 11 December 1952, the second appears to run on directly from the first and ends in [?March 1953], while the third volume begins on 26 February 1953. Subject matter concerns editorial notes, research points, character studies, and plot development. Volume I features an annotation on its front cover which reads as 'Book finished - bar correcting final typescript - 20 November 1954.
