Notebook was begun on 27 February 1955 and runs to 31 December 1955. First page features the annotation 'The Sable Coat. Provisional Vol.I. Now containing new synopsis.' First page of manuscript text bears the title 'First attempt at a provisional ch.1 (just to feel my way, get to know characters & get perhaps some inkling of how the style may evolve.' Twenty pages at the end of the notebook refer to a seperate, unspecified 'play'. Notebook also includes a german-language letter to Edith Simon from 'Mado', undated.
