Journals of William Soutar, with a notebook of cross-references to items in journals 1 and 2., 1930-1943.

 Sub-Series
Identifier: MSS.8660-8669

Scope and Contents

These journals, which were kept concurrently with William Soutar's diaries (MSS.8730-8758), were used for more elaborate discussion of his daily thoughts on politics, art, philosophy and religion, as well as for a considerable amount of self-analysis. The journals end abruptly in 1940, and do not resume until July 1943, when Soutar took to writing his 'Diary of a Dying Man', which, together with his diaries, was used in compiling ‘Diaries of a Dying Man’, (Edinburgh, 1954).
