The reason for the presence of these documents in the papers of the Erskine Murray family is not known, but it has been conjectured that they might have come into the hands of James Erskine, Lord Barjarg, in 1748, when he was appointed Sheriff-depute of Perthshire; if so, he appears to have made no official use of them.
