Biography
Harry Fairlie Hodge was born in Glasgow in 1883. He joined the Lanarkshire volunteers and in 1908 when the Territorial Army was formed, his unit became the 7th Battalion Scottish Rifles (Cameronians) in which he was a Lieutenant. He worked as a civil engineer. He was called up in August 1914, and served in Gallipoli, Mesopotamia and Palestine. By 1916, he had been promoted to Captain and was in Egypt, where he was awarded an MC for his service at the Battle of Romani. In 1917 he was transferred to the Royal Engineers and took part in laying a water pipe across the Sinai Desert. After the war, Hodge returned to a career in engineering.
