Biography
William Gary McCartney (?1909-?1985) was secretary of the Glasgow branch of the International Brigade Association, a veterans’ organisation founded to preserve the memory of the men and women from Britain and Ireland who volunteered and fought during the Spanish Civil War of 1936-39, and those who supported the cause of the Spanish Republic at home. He was also secretary of the Spanish Workers Defence Committee. He himself had served in the war, enlisting in 1937 and rising to the rank of Sergeant. He was held as a prisoner of war in San Pedro de Cardeña Prison, Burgos, and Ondarreta Prison, San Sebastian in Spain, before being repatriated in 1939.
